A Florida man was arrested on Sunday morning after he reportedly assaulted a new neighbour and threatened her with a machete, NBC 2 says.
Witnesses told Collier County Sheriff's deputies that Ronald Coyle Jr., 35, smashed the unidentified woman's head into a concrete driveway, thrust his thumbs into her eyes, and hit her back several times.
After the woman had fled to a neighbor's house, Coyle allegedly got a machete from his garage and came after her, saying I know you're afraid of me the witnesses said.
Coyle was charged with an aggravated battery with intent to inflict serious bodily harm or to disfigure and aggravate an assault on a person 65 or older, according to prison records. He is expected to appear before the court on 14 December.
The woman who was attacked told the replying deputies that Coyle had been taking drugs the night before and was acting "crazy." When the deputies found him, they said he seemed disoriented, agitated, excited, and very tired. He answered questions with unrelated answers, they said.
The woman, who said she had just moved to Marco Island, told the detectives that just before the attack, Coyle spoke to her in English—she doesn't speak English—and then slammed her head into the driveway so hard that the neighbours could hear it according to the deputies. Witnesses intervened, pulling Coyle out of the woman.
Coyle has had a long criminal record in Collier County over the last 10 years, with most of his arrests on drug charges, including criminal mischief, aggravated assault, and several vehicle charges.
